Sagetech, maker of what it says are

the world’s smallest transponders,

announced its next-generation of units,

the MX range, at the Xponential show

in May. Sagetech’s Jim Davis remarked

that thousands of the existing XP

range have been sold, but increased

regulatory oversight of drones now

demands greater assurances of safety.

The range will include models

certified by the FAA, as well as the US

DoD, to a military specification known

as AIMS Mark XIIA, a Mode 5-capable

transponder that will soon be required

for aircraft used by NATO.

The MX line-up includes ADS-B in

and out plus support for two antennae,

normally top and bottom of the craft for

full antenna pattern coverage.

An MX unit is 3.3 x 2.5 x 0.75 in, and

weighs 5.3 oz. It comes as standard

with RS-232. RS-422, and Ethernet

interfaces for integration with onboard

avionics and, like its forebear, has an

integrated pressure sensor and altitude

encoder.
