The AI behind the Swift UAV for example has out-competed champion fliers, and on page 20 we talk to Prof Davide Scaramuzza, the leader of the Swift team, about the development of its machine learning algorithms detailed in Platform One on page 6. Also, driverless cars are operating in commercial services in California, Arizona, Beijing and Shanghai, with improved safety records over people. Highlighting this, the latest figures from US regulator the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that over 42,000 people died on US roads in 2022. The NHTSA sees its emergency braking proposals, which rely on AI, as cutting that figure by half. The industry has been working for decades on the technology with safety at its heart. Where it is heading is illustrated in our reports from the Commercial UAV show, on page 74, and the Paris Air Show on page 104. AI is also making its way into wireless systems to reduce the bandwidth required for video for remotely operated systems. The quality is not comparable yet, as we discuss on page 38, but as UAV racing has shown, it is only a matter of time before it overtakes the traditional technologies.
