The system is based around a comms module from Quectel with its own telematics protocols and cloud service. This enables a round-trip latency of 300 ms on a 4G network and around 270 ms on 5G. The vehicle telematics modules support multiple wired and wireless protocols in a single integrated unit with a high-performance antenna. The software runs on spare processing in the Quectel module, eliminating the extra time that would be needed for an external telematics microcontroller. This can run rules for the sample rates and CAN bus monitoring, as well as rules on what to do with old data. Beam also has its own SIM card for the module, to connect to different cellular operators around the world, and its own cloud service on Amazon Web Services to ensure the low latency. The cloud service ensures vehicleto-cloud message integrity, and can be deployed in any region.
