Also, at their end of life, the permanent magnets in these motors can be decomposed or dissolved in solvent to recover 90% of the magnetic powder, which can then be reused. Once processed, the material retains around 95% of its magnetisation (compared with entirely new neodymium magnets). Overall, this results in a much faster, less expensive and simpler process for refurbishing permanent magnets. Such recyclability could also lower the production costs and hence prices of e-motors significantly. Thermal management As discussed, higher electric currents and frequencies tend to increase the resistance in copper wires. These (among other factors) cause intense heat to build up in e-motors over time and as performance limits start to be reached. In turn, more heat drives up resistance, which overall has detrimental effects on electrical efficiency. In addition to tempering current requirements by increasing a motor’s voltage, manufacturers are investigating improved approaches to active cooling. One of the first steps over the past few years towards better cooling has been closer understanding of the ways that heat accumulates. Tests of electric motors with thermistors in the windings or thermal cameras pointed at them have been run extensively to identify the primary hotspots and paths along which the heat spreads. Having accurately profiled the thermal characteristics of their motors, some companies have come up with novel ways to improve cooling. One of the most effective has been to design and construct vent-like structures on the outer rotor housings, whose shapes lead them to function like air scoops, rapidly drawing air inside their motors as they spin. This, combined with advances Some e-motors now feature rotors made from aluminium or carbon composite as a result of advances away from iron or steel www.plettenbe rg -mot ore n. com info@pl ett e nb erg -mot or e n.c om Po ssible c o nfigura t i o ns 5,000 max. power -to - weight 26 kW/kg 100% UA V, UUV, UGV, ROV and ro bo ti c s mo to rs pro duc ed +10,000 max.
