Unmanned control and comms technologies for surface and underwater craft are allowing more autonomous, untethered exploration, with the prospect of more efficient logistics. IBM has been working with the Mayflower project on an ambitious bid for an autonomous journey across the Atlantic ocean. After a first attempt, on page 24 we look at the valuable lessons learned by the project and the prospects for unmanned aquatic research. These ocean-going autonomous craft need safety-critical systems, and the latest developments in embedded computing and safety-critical code development are detailed on page 42, while more efficient machine learning for a tiny autonomous floating sensor is discussed in Platform One on page 6. This is alongside new techniques for building a propeller that can operate at depths of 6 km, commissioned by the National Oceanographic Centre in the UK, which sponsored the Ocean Business 2021 show (see page 84). Air and sea systems were also combined at the exhibition, with Plymouth Rock Technologies in our show report displaying an amphibious hexacopter UAV that can land on water, bridging the two worlds of exploration.
