76 A s we head towards the middle of the year, fighting continues across Syria, Iraq and Yemen, and ripples of these conflicts resonate from Asia to the Americas. Perhaps it’s no surprise therefore that the annual International Defence Exhibition and Conference (IDEX) 2017, which took place in Abu Dhabi in February, was the largest yet, attracting more than 105,000 visitors and 1200 exhibitors. Featuring strongly across the tri-service event was a wide range of unmanned systems and complementary solutions, aimed at offering international defence delegations the means to enhance their aerial intelligence capabilities, automate routine duties and missions, or acquire force multipliers through autonomous vehicles and countermeasures.
