50 C osworth came to prominence 50 years ago by showing the world of Grand Prix racing how an engine should be designed. These days it is also making waves in the UAV world, being the first to exploit the efficiency gain of compression ignition in the sphere of small-displacement engines. Its AG2 is a 250 cc two-stroke boxer twin that runs on jet fuel and which has set new standards for its power rating in respect of fuel consumption and time between overhauls (TBO). The AG project The AG project is managed by Guido Monterzino, with John Heath as principal engineer, John Vaughan as head of analysis and James Allen as head of design. When the project began (see sidebar: History), Cosworth had no background of compression ignition or two-stroke technology; that did however mean it could apply its considerable engine design and development expertise on a clean-sheet-of-paper basis. Arguably it was advantageous that, unlike others in the field, the design Ian Bamsey looks at the development of this UAV compression-ignition boxer that’s designed to run on jet fuel Another winning formula Cosworth’s unique compression-ignition two-stroke for UAV use April/May 2017 | Unmanned Systems Technology
