4 I recall asking a top Sixties racecar designer why, when the huge benefit of downforce had just been demonstrated, everyone didn’t immediately jump onto the bandwagon – including himself with his own highly renowned designs? His answer was primarily a shrug of the shoulders. Wings and suchlike just weren’t what racecars were all about. But the one or two who had thought outside of the box soon changed that. These days there isn’t the same scope to make fundamental changes to the motorsport engineering landscape, but the environment of unmanned systems is different. Therein lies the potential for new thinking that might be disarmingly simple in theory yet extremely effective in practice. Take the PS in this issue: there isn’t the same requirement to get an unmanned aerial vehicle back to base after a mission than if it had a person on board, so why not take advantage of that to exploit the much greater potential of a one-way only trip? Likewise outside the box is the concept behind our cover story. If your unmanned marine vehicle encounters adverse ocean conditions, why not take advantage of the lack of crew to make a relatively straightforward transformation of it into an underwater vehicle? If you are now shrugging your own shoulders thinking, “Why didn’t I come up with that?” then I sympathise, but I am sure that reading this publication will inspire you to similarly unconventional thought. And as soon as that pays off don’t hesitate to let us know!
