4 “M otor racing as we have known it won’t be around 20 years from now,” sighed the technical director of a major racecar constructor. His company makes a good living from manufacturing identical cars for a ‘spec’ series but these days its talented design and development engineers have little to challenge them. Outside Formula One and the World Endurance Championship, motorsport offers fewer and fewer opportunities to innovate. “Which aspect of unmanned systems technology should we investigate?” I couldn’t properly answer that question. His company has expertise in aerodynamics, structures, advanced composite production, powertrain engineering and electronics, plus the creativity and dynamism that were a prerequisite of success in the traditional racing world. There is a myriad of unmanned system avenues it could beneficially explore. My answer was for him to read Unmanned Systems Technology , study the diverse projects we are documenting and apply the mindset that established his company as a leader in racing. I have no doubt that we will soon be hearing its name in the context of a fascinating project – which could be in the land, marine, air or even space domains. Of course, across the vast spectrum of engineering there are many other specialist organisations similarly poised to bring innovation. We are delighted to be part of the process whereby they will be helping to push the boundaries.
